Who loves a gin and tonic? We do, that's for sure, which is great because there are lots of excellent gin joints in our locale.
Now, this most delicious of drinks that originated in 17th Century Holland has always been somewhat of a household name when it comes to a weekend tipple - but in recent years it has enjoyed a serious Renaissance (or ‘Ginaissance’).
In fact, according to The Guardian, an excess of 47 million bottles of gin were sold in 2017 alone. That equates to a whopping £1.2billion in revenue. What’s more, there are now around 315 distilleries in the UK - double the amount there were only five years ago. And if that wasn’t enough to persuade you on the ‘Ginaissance’, artisan and craft gins have recently seen a 25% rise, whereas vodka and whisky sales have remained static.
Wow, there’s little doubt about it - we are in the era of gin - a botanical drink enjoyed by folks up and down the country.
Local pioneers like Forest Gin were launched from founder, Karl Bond's, kitchen table and now distribute their artisanal products worldwide. And according to Karl, the quality of gin has improved so much, resulting in a great deal of diversity within the industry.
